Sadly this tree was suffering from Meripilus Giganteus fungus.
Existing infections cannot be controlled and felling for safety reasons is usually the only option for infected trees, particularly in public access areas

Difficult to say when this tree was planted or self sown.
If it`s the Tree seen in these old photos, it makes it well over 100yrs of age.
