The members of the Ipswich and District Meat Traders
Association took their annual outing on Monday by brake, when
of a membership of 85, about 35 responded to the invitation of
Mr. Owen Turner (of the firm of Messrs. W. and A. J. Turner, leather
merchants, of Ipswich and Bures) to visit their tannery works
at Bures, and receive their hospitality.
A description of their journey then follows,
...the party was shown over the works by Mr. Owen Turner and Mr.
Sidney Turner. The whole process of tanning was exhibited and
explained by Mr. Owen Turner. The main object of interest to the
visitors was the process of rounding the hides, and it was here
that an important lesson was inculcated by Mr. Turner, who pointed
out the defects and the damage that were caused by bad flaying.
Altogether the visitors received a fine object lesson...
The magnitude of Messrs. Turners operations was shown in
the fact that there were 6,000 hides in the various pits in process
of tanning, while on the premises were 800 tons of oak bark.
The party then repaired to the Eight Bells Hotel for luncheon,
where the associations chairman, Mr. G. Dunnett, proposed
the health of Mr. Owen Turner and Mr. S. Turner, with musical
honours (?).
He remarked that it had been a big eye-opener to see the various
defects caused either by the ignorance or negligence of the meat
traders.
men, and he trusted that they might induce their men to take more
care in the flaying.
Mr Owen Turner suitably replied. He said he really felt that if
they stood beside their rounding-table and saw the hides as they
came before them it would certainly be an instruction to them
as to the damage that could be done with the knife before they
got to the hide. He hoped they had seen something which would
be beneficial to them and to the trade at large, and result in
them getting better flayed hides in future.
So the meat traders day out included something of a reprimand,
and a headmasterly instruction - must do better in future
to ensure unscathed hides which would mean a better price for
the meat trader, and more usable material for the tannery
