Wormingford Airfield (USAAF) Airfield in 1943/45

One of the ground staff at Wormingford,
was Robert Sand.

Records indicate, "Robert Sand was undoubtedly one of the most talented propeller specialist engineers in the entire 8th USAAF"


Robert was a prolific photographer and recorded thousands of images during his stay in the UK.

They are currently held at the Imperial War Museum at Duxford

Robert even found time to visit Doe`s Windmill

Handwritten caption on reverse of the left photo:-

A farmhouse next to Wormingford windmill damaged by V1 bombs.

However, we know the Windmill was in a state of disrepair from the late 1930`s, but here Robert is referring to the farm house.

The left side of the roof has collapsed and broken away at the chimney
Presumably living next to a very active Heavy Bomber Airfield, loud noises were quite common.
I dont recall any evidence of a V1 Bomb falling on the area.
